Brett Favre, who announced the end of his NFL career in March, was introduced as a New York Jet last night during a press conference.
This morning, I finally saw Favre in his bright, shiny green and white Jets jersey. It was so weird! It was like seeing an ex out at a bar with another woman and masochistically staring, even though it still hurts to see him. Love bites!
FoxSports.com’s Jay Glazer broke the colossal trade story late Wednesday night. Regardless of if I wanted to or not, I dove right into the news coverage.
For trading Favre to the Jets, the Packers will receive a conditional fourth-round pick that could end up as high as a first-rounder depending upon how the Jets perform during the 2008 season, says news sources. So, fans now have a new reason to root for Favre even though he won’t be sporting the green and gold. Plus, the Packers can move forward without any qualms or hard feelings.
I wasn’t going to delve into my thoughts on the matter simply because we’ve already been bombarded by non-stop coverage of Favre’s on-again, off-again retirement. The constant and frenzied reporting monopolized our TVs, computers, radios and newspapers for the past two months, making me want to throw any form of media out the window. However, I can’t help my need to vent. See, Favre was the only Green Bay Packers quarterback I followed, he was my first love. Losing a first love is never easy and the Favre-Packers split is no different. Naturally, I’m truly dismayed by this dramatic saga.
In March, Favre’s retirement was somewhat of a surprise to me. When I considered his success last season – 4,155 passing yards, 28 touchdown passes, plus career highs in both completion percentage and yards per attempt – it just didn’t make any sense.
What wasn’t shocking in the least, however, was the news of Favre second-guessing his retirement. It seems that while Favre could handle defenses with courage and physical trauma with nobility, his retirement and inevitable onslaught of doubt and regret has proven far beyond his coping capabilities. I guess I can’t blame the guy for being fickle; after all, football was his life for many, many years and it had to have been hard hanging up his cleats for good.
While the announcement of Favre's retirement was a dark day for the NFL, the Packers and cheeseheads alike, Favre fans had several months to come to terms with the fact that the Packers would move forward with Aaron Rodgers in the 2008 season. But in the midst of our bereavement and near recovery, Favre resurfaced, this time, not only second-guessing his retirement, but reconsidering his status in Green Bay.
I guess the issue I have with the entire situation is that Favre was calling the shots from the get-go. He retired; that was his own decision, not the Packers. Then, after months of supposed wavering and high-maintenance ballyhoo, what eventually ensued was ugly and, frankly, pretty sad. Once Favre requested a release from Green Bay in early July, the he said, she said BS spewed from both sides and was splattered across the headlines.
This situation progressively got more and more ridiculous as the media overly dramatized the whole ordeal, causing rumors to quickly swirl of a trade. Finally, after several long and “brutally honest” chats with head coach Mike McCarthy, it was evident that Favre no longer wanted to play for the Pack.
Sure, the media circus didn’t stop the situation from turning into a silly soap opera, but Favre did help his cause either. Like the Wisconsin Sports Bar first said, Favre handled the situation like a “diva.” He accused the franchise of being unjust when I think he was just disappointed or embarrassed by the fact that they weren’t going to be jerked around by his indecision any longer.
I completely stand behind the Packers. I’ve always been a Packers fan and always will be regardless of if Favre is leading the team or not. Actually, I’m very eager to see Rodgers on the field during the season opener at Lambeau Field, but most of all, I’m just ready for football-filled Sundays again!
The Brett Favre era is officially over for me. I know I’ll recover. In fact, I’ll probably still watch him make wild passes and daring plays this season as a New York Jet... with misty eyes and from afar, of course.

Your reaction was identical to mine. I even used the same two analogies as you did. "He's dead to me" and the boyfriend/girlfriend one. Damn you Favre, you stupid bastard.

^5 to you Karen.
I keep saying, he is acting like a 4 year old.
Sounds like he has changed his mind more times than a woman.
I believe what comes around, goes around and by the look on his face at the NY Press conference, I'd say - he isn't to sure of things right now and he is getting what's coming.

Hey Todd-
Here's a hilarious article from FoxSports.com. The Favre-Packers relationship is compared to a couple that's on the brink of divorce.

It's really funny how many people are using that sort of analogy. Ha!
Anyway, let’s try to mend our broken hearts. Go Pack Go!

"...by the look on his face at the NY Press conference, I'd say - he isn't to sure of things right now..."
You know, you are so right, Doglover... I never thought about that. Seriously, look at his expression! I hope he's pissing his pants right now and I hope he's kicking himself in the butt, too.

I definitely don't blame the Packers for what happened.
This is as bogus as Namath to the Rams. Unitas to the Chargers. Mays to the Mets.
I don't hate you Brett Favre, but I hope you fail. Here's to 20+ INTs for the Jets this season.

"I don't hate you Brett Favre, but I hope you fail."
This is the best line of the day, and expresses my sentiments exactly. I would love to see him bomb this season.
He could've and would've gone out on top - a legacy, a hero to Green Bay.
He botched that. Big time. For one final mediocre season with the JETS.
Seriously.
I'm wearing my Favre jersey inside out this season.
